Project: ‘CITIx60’ by Esther Goh

By Darshita Jain

Singapore based illustrator and graphic designer Esther Goh recently created a Singapore city guide in her unique style that mixes pop culture with magic realism. The map is designed and illustrated by Esther and printed by Viction:ary.

Talking about the project, Esther says, “Back in 2015, Viction:ary commissioned me to illustrate a map for their CITIx60 Singapore city guide, which was finally published last year. The map doubles up as a sleeve for the front and back cover when folded. We decided to feature the southern part of Singapore, where the historical Singapore River flows through Marina Bay, CBD, and other areas. The map not only highlights iconic buildings, places of interest,  famous local dishes, but also various lush green spaces to highlight the theme of ‘Garden City’.”

This is also an extension of Esther’s previous work featuring Merlion. Says Esther, “Expanding on my earlier illustration series titled ‘Please Come Back Tomorrow’, the national icon Merlion once again makes several appearances in this work. In fact, there are five official Merlion statues which are recognized by the Singapore Tourism Board.”

The city guide is available here.
